THANKS TO MY FATHER WHO GAVE ME THIS GUCCI FACE
Using sign language and spoken word, the work explores feelings of exclusion and the search for belonging, drawing upon a personal story about growing up in eastern Slovakia with Deaf parents. “Gucci face” serves as a slogan that reflects the connection among visibility, identity, and social position. Symbolizing how social value can be purchased: a trade often present in Slavic cultures, where (through commodities such as luxury cars or clothes) individuals are cosplaying a higher social class, hoping one day to become one. A place of shooting in Vila Stiassni serves as a symbol of bourgeois identity and political power. Alongside footage of my childhood home, built by my father's hands, turning the luxurious architecture into a stage for a marginalized subject existing between languages, modes of representation, and social norms.
